Use Device Encryption

Advice:
  • Encrypt sensitive data on all devices, including laptops, smartphones, and tablets, to protect information in case the device is lost or stolen. Device encryption makes it significantly harder for unauthorized users to access your data without valid credentials.
  • Ensure that encryption is applied not only to data but also to the operating system and applications that may contain sensitive information.
Guideline:
  • Full Disk Encryption Tools: Utilize full disk encryption (FDE) tools such as:
    • BitLocker (for Windows): Go to Control Panel > System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption, and follow the prompts to enable encryption.
    • FileVault (for macOS): Access System Preferences > Security & Privacy > FileVault to enable and configure encryption.
  • Mobile Device Encryption: For smartphones and tablets, enable encryption through the device settings (usually found under Security or Privacy). Both iOS and Android devices typically have built-in encryption options.
  • Set Strong Authentication: Pair encryption with strong passwords, PINs, or biometric methods to provide another layer of security. Regularly update these authentication methods.
